Let’s be honest – we’re all guilty of over-indulging probably more often than we should.
Some a little more than others, granted, but I don’t doubt that the majority of people would be able to think of a time they regretted something they ate or drank… simply because it sat there in front of them calling their name.
A new year is all about making new and positive changes. Many people’s New Year’s resolutions always revolve around becoming healthier, but the term ‘health’ sends many of us running in fright and wondering where to begin.
There are a few diets out there that allow you to lose a lot of weight and fast, though they aren’t necessarily a good choice. Most people end up hating the plan and quitting, vowing never to try to lose weight again.
Last year, I found the answer. I’ve discovered five simple ways of changing your daily life to allow you to become healthier in general, while still losing some of that dreaded extra weight along the way.
1. Swap the Sugary Drinks for Lemon Water
In my teenage years, I would end most school days with a large bag of Doritos and a Diet Coke, pretty horrendous right?
Since then, I’ve managed to get myself hooked on fruit infused water. Adding a slice of lemon or some frozen berries to an ice cold glass of water will do your body, complexion, mind and general health absolute wonders. The more you drink, the more likely you are to shed a few extra pounds.
2. Forget the Elevator, Take the Stairs
After a long day at the office, the last thing you want to do is hobble down the stairs, so you instantly head for the elevator.
I was completely guilty of this too. Those steps, although they might look like nothing, soon add up in terms of burnt calories. Did you know that one flight of stairs, three times per day burns 15 calories?
Even if you need to talk to someone elsewhere in the building, instead of picking up the phone, take the stairs. Walking up or down three flights of stairs three times per day will burn a minimum of 45 calories, and although it might seem a little amount, they’re calories you wouldn’t have burnt by taking the elevator.
3. Snack, but Snack Right
If we go back in time to 2013, you’d find me looking guilty next to my desk draw that was full to the brim of chips, chocolate and sweets. Everyone told me it was fine because I was ‘young’ and I needed the ‘energy’, how wrong we all were!
Yes, a Kit Kat might be delicious. But for the same amount of calories (and a whole lot more energy), eat a banana.
Eating sugar makes you crave sugar, so before you know it, one Kit Kat could have turned into three Kit Kats.
Trust me, eating a piece of fruit or some chopped veg with dip as a snack choice is far more satisfying than a fattening chocolate bar in the long run… and your body will thank you for it!
4. Short but Sweet Workouts
Many people seem to be under the impression that unless you work out for at least an hour in the gym and leave dripping with sweat, you’ve not worked hard enough.
That is not true in the slightest.
It’s the intensity of the workout that makes the difference, not necessarily the length of the workout. Swapping your hour-long half-attempted workout that leaves you wishing you hadn’t bothered, for a quick and powerful 30-minute cardio and/or weight session, will do your body and your thoughts towards exercise, some good.
5. Get Creative in the Kitchen
With all the deals on at our local supermarkets, it’s far too easy to pick up a jar of calorific sauce to add to pasta or chicken.
Although it may sometimes be a little more costly, it’s far more beneficial to your health to make the sauce yourself. It’s also far simpler than you might think!
For a sauce to accompany Spaghetti Bolognese, combine tomato puree, canned tomatoes, mixed herbs, a little spice and heat in a pan. Et voila! You have a beautiful and healthy sauce for you and your family to enjoy.
Take it from me, swapping your unhealthy habits for some healthy living will not only help you stay lean, but will change the way you look at yourself.
